Stovetop apple butter makes the perfect taste of fall! Richer and more full-bodied than applesauce, apple butter has notes of caramel and spice. I like to use a mix of apple varieties for the most delicious flavor!

This small batch recipe is perfect for a smaller crop of apples, and yields 1 1/2 cups of apple butter. Apple butter is delicious on toast. It’s also the perfect topping for oatmeal, yogurt, as a filling for cinnamon rolls and in this apple butter Danish braid!

Stovetop Apple Butter

How to make stovetop apple butter

Cook the apples with the other ingredients until the apples are softened and begin to break down, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool briefly before transferring to a food processor and blending until smooth.

Return the mixture to the sauce pan and continue simmering for another 30 minutes, or until the apple butter is a medium caramel and holds its shape on a spoon. Transfer apple butter to a glass bowl or measuring cup, and let cool to room temperature before using.

Stovetop apple butter makes the perfect taste of fall! You’ll love this delicious apple spread and the small batch recipe is so EASY!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (900 g) apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
  • 1/4 cup (55 g) light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 g) pure apple juice
  • 1 Tbsp (15 g) lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Combine apples, sugar, brown sugar, apple juice, lemon juice, spices, and salt in a heavy saucepan over medium high heat. 2. Carefully transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend for 1 minute, or until smooth and pureed (with the texture of applesauce).
  3. Return the mixture to the sauce pan and continue simmering for another 30 minutes, or until the apple butter is a medium caramel and holds its shape on a spoon.
  4. Transfer apple butter to a glass bowl or measuring cup and let cool to room temperature before using.
  5. Store apple butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.
