Stovetop Apple Butter (Small Batch)

Stovetop apple butter makes the perfect taste of fall! Richer and more full-bodied than applesauce, apple butter has notes of caramel and spice. I like to use a mix of apple varieties for the most delicious flavor!

Stovetop Apple Butter

This small batch recipe is perfect for a smaller crop of apples, and yields 1 1/2 cups of apple butter. Apple butter is delicious on toast. It’s also the perfect topping for oatmeal, yogurt, as a filling for cinnamon rolls and in this apple butter Danish braid!

How to make stovetop apple butter

Cook the apples with the other ingredients until the apples are softened and begin to break down, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool briefly before transferring to a food processor and blending until smooth.

Return the mixture to the sauce pan and continue simmering for another 30 minutes, or until the apple butter is a medium caramel and holds its shape on a spoon. Transfer apple butter to a glass bowl or measuring cup, and let cool to room temperature before using.

  3. Return the mixture to the sauce pan and continue simmering for another 30 minutes, or until the apple butter is a medium caramel and holds its shape on a spoon.
  4. Transfer apple butter to a glass bowl or measuring cup and let cool to room temperature before using.
  5. Store apple butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.
