Brown Butter Sugar Cookies

These soft baked brown butter sugar cookies are everything you want in a cookie: tender, soft, chewy, and flavored with rich brown butter!

Brown butter: Cook 1/2 cup (112 g) unsalted butter in a heavy saucepan until browned. Pour into a bowl and chill for 30 minutes.

Step 1

Make dough: Whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

Combine 1/2 cup (112 g) room temperature butter, cooled brown butter, and sugar in a large mixer bowl.

Step 3

Beat at medium speed until creamy, about 1 minute.

Step 4

Add one large egg, one egg yolk, and vanilla extract to the bowl.

Mix until combined.

Step 6

Add sour cream to the mixer bowl (sour cream makes the cookies nice and tender!).

Mix in sour cream until combined, about 10 seconds.

Gradually mix in dry ingredients on low speed until a soft dough forms.

Use a medium cookie scoop to roll 1 1/2-inch balls of dough (approximately 28 grams each).

Roll the balls in sugar or nonpareils to coat and place 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Press tops to flatten slightly.

Bake cookies until light golden and just set ( 11 minutes). Cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
